Keeping in the view of growing need for a health society and a disease free world, IIMSAR would offer MBBS programme in the beginning which will later expand to PG programmes in various streams of health education with an initial intake of 100 students in MBBS.

Department of Anatomy

Anatomy is taught and learnt mainly by dissection. This is supported by theory classes teaching detailed anatomy stressing the applied and clinical aspects including histology and applied anatomy. There is a seminar hall with modern teaching aids. The department is equipped with latest infrastructure and an excellent museum for the benefit of the students.

Department of Physiology

The Department of Physiology has excellent well equipped laboratories, seminar hall, demonstration halls. The department has library books and journals for the use of the staff as well as students.

Department of Bio-Chemistry

The excellent features of this department would be the Research Laboratory with modern equipments such as Cycle Ergograph, Physiograph, Spirometers, MossoÂ’s Ergograph, Benedict-Roth Apparatus which the students would handle.

Knowledge of Biochemistry is vital to the understanding of the physiology of life. With this objective our teaching programme has been tailored to suit the under-graduate studentsÂ’ needs. They will go through individually an enjoyable learning experience gaining thereby knowledge and skills in basic Biochemistry tests.

Integrated teaching involving the pre-clinical and clinical departments will be an innovative approach. To fulfill these goals we maintain updated laboratories equipped with semiauto analysers, blood gas analysers, spectrophotometers, gel electrophoretic apparatus, Flam photometers and chromatographic chambers.

Department of Pathology

The department is well equipped with microscopes, Microtome, automatic cell counters, computers for diagnostic & teaching purpose. It has full fledged units of Heamatology, Histopathology, Cytology and Clinical Pathology.

Department of Microbiology

The teaching resources of the dept. include museum specimens, books, clinical material etc. There are various divisions like Bacteriology, Immunology, Histology and Parasitology etc.

Department of Pharmacology

The dept. imparts knowledge & skills in pharmacology to enable the students to be well versed with the rational use of drugs in a scientific way with a human touch. Well equipped laboratories are available for practical training. Department of Pharmacology has been approved as adverse drug Monitoring Centre under Pharmacoviglance Programe of India (PVPI), Indian Pharmacopocia commission, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India. Department has conducted students seminar, Debate, Pharma Quiz and other academic competition involving MBBS students of different semesters.

Department of Forensic Medicine and Toxicology

This department equips would be medical professional with the knowledge relating to the administration of justice specially in the case of unnatural deaths. This knowledge helps to investigate to give expert opinion towards the cause of death.

Department of Community Medicine

This department grooms the students with the objective of producing doctors to serve the country. The teaching of the department will be helpful for the doctors to become competent enough in the practice of medicine holistically which will include promotive, preventive and rehabilitative aspects of the ailments. Activities of this department will also include community based field practice in Urban and Rural areas.

1General medicine

The Department of General Medicine at IIMSAR & Dr B C Roy Hospital teaches undergraduate students aiming to train physicians with theoretical knowledge and by imparting technical skills and behavioural attributes so that they can serve the society. In the General Medicine Department, we are having 120 beds in 4 wards [2 male and 2 female wards] having best in-house facility to serve the ailing patients. The department is fully equipped with necessary equipments, emergency medicine and resuscitation equipments for dealing with all types of emergencies. The Department has been organizing Health Awareness Camps for the people of Haldia and surrounding villages or remote areas where good basic health care facilities are not available.

Intensive Care Unit:

The hospital has the total of 20 intensive care beds which are distributed in various departments.

All the intensive care beds are fully equipped with multipara monitor, central oxygen/ suction/ air arrangement and critical care equipments like ventilators, defibrillator, blood gas analyzer, ECG machine, pulse oxymeter, portable X-Ray and ultra sound machines and all emergency medicines/ kits. The intensive care units are under the control of highly qualified specialists, trained nurses and paramedical staff.

2.  Paediatrics (Medicine)

Paediatric is a branch of medicine that involves the medical care of infants, children and adolescents. At ICARE Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (IIMSAR)Haldia, our primary focus is in providing the top- of- the- line paediatric specialities backed by cutting edge facilities like well equipped Neonatal Intensive Care Unit ( NICU) and Paediatric Intensive Care Unit( PICU) including ventilator care, well baby clinics ,immunization clinics and special care of preterm babies, making Bidhan Chandra Roy HospitalHaldia, teaching hospital of IIMSAR a one stop destination for holistic healthcare experience for the children and adolescence. All level of care is given starting from the latest immunizations to complete well being , with the provisions of 60 bedded ward and paediatric OPD. The team includes doctors and nurses who have undergone special training for the treatment and of patients in NICU and PICU.Our department also provides with a departmental library having various paediatric and neonatal books and national and international journals.

Regular clinical classes, Demonstration classes and lecture classes are taken by our experienced teachers resulting in a very good University results.

MBBS Duration :

5 ½ Years (including one year internship)

Undergraduate (MBBS) level-100 students admitted per year overall planning of the MBBS course and rationality

As per the guidelines of the West Bengal University of Health Sciences, the entire tenure of training of a medical graduate student is divided into four Professional MBBS Examination (University examinations) with one year of compulsory rotator internship.

1st Professional MBBS Examination (Pre-clinics)

To appear after first two semester (one year). It Encompasses three basic subject of medical science (pre Clinic) i.e. Anatomy, where one should know every structural detail of the human body ; Physiology, where a student will come to know that how all the parts of our body serves its normal function ; and Biochemistry, where one can learn the structural and functional harmony of the system at the molecular level.

2nd Professional MBBS Examination (Para-clinics)

To appear after the end of fifth semester ( one and half year ). In this tenure one is supposed to learn the Para-clinical subjects i.e. Microbiology, which teaches about different micro-organisms causing human diseases; Pathology, in which subject the reason, underlying mechanism of genesis and outcome of all types of diseases is taught; Pharmacology, where one learns about the details of drugs and their uses and finally the Forensic Medicine and Toxicology which deals mainly with different legal and forensic aspects needed in medicine as well as effects of various toxic substance.

3rd Professional MBBS Examination (Clinics)

 

To appear after four (6th to 9th ) semesters (two year ), which deals with all the clinical subject, trained in the hospital at beside of the patient. A student is desired to learn the beside diagnosis and possible management of a particular disease. He / She is also directed to attend and manage emergency cases under guidance. For the sake of convenience this entire tenure is subdivided in two parts.

1. 3rd Professional MBBS Part-I

This is a course of two semester (one year), dealing with three subjects as, Ophthalmology (Eye ) Otolaryngology (ENT), where all the diseases and managements of the eye and ear-nose throat are taught respectively. Community Medicine, another subject in this part is taught to the students (from the very first year ), which actually trains a students about different public health problems and its preventions.

2. 3rd Professional MBBS Part II

This is a course of two semester (one year ), where a student undergoes training in beside clinics (i.e. diagnosis and management of a particular disease ) in General Medicine, General Surgery including Orthopaedics, Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Paediatrics including Neonatology.

Compulsory rotatory internship

 

An obvious part of the MBBS training, where a student learns the diagnosis and managements of different diseases with his /her rotator duties in different disciplines of clinical subject. After completion of this period he /she is to be considered for award of the MBBS degree.

Examinations :

Besides University examinations (Regular and Supplementary), the College Authority regularly holds periodical assessment examination as per the guidelines of the controlling University both in theory, practical/clinical as well as viva-voce that also include day-today assessment. Some departments also conduct some other special examinations like Class-Assistantship / Prosectorship etc.
